NIKE SITE SUMMIT : WHAT IS ITS FUTURE?

Officials at Fort Richardson have announced plans to demolish the facilities at Nike Site Summit. Should they be allowed to proceed?

Site Summit was built by the U.S. Army during the Cold War as a Nike missile installation. Its location in the Chugach Mountains (approx. mile 6 Arctic Valley Road) was chosen as a means of protecting Anchorage, Ft. Richardson and Elmendorf AFB from possible communist air attack. The Site was active from 1959 to 1979, and regularly housed at least 50 soldiers. Most of Site Summit’s historic structures and buildings remain, and the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Anchorage Historic Properties, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the city’s historic landmarks, invites the public to share comments, opinions, personal stories and photographs at the NIKE SITE SUMMIT PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE.

Current plans by the Army are to demolish the remaining facilities. Should this occur, or should the site be restored? Should the site be open to tourism or include other interpretive signage? Anchorage Historic Properties is inviting public opinion on this process.
